RE: How do I overcome the nighttime crazies?

Thank you to everyone for your support. Just by posting, I've started to deal with what is making me drag my feet. Very inexpensive therapy.
Since the original post, I held a huge garage sale and sold some big pieces of furniture and family heirlooms that everyone admired but nobody wanted. That started the ball rolling. I now keep a calendar/journal to keep me motivated. Action is also very inexpensive therapy.
To answer some questions, I am a woman with no RVing experience, but I have tented a lot and have no qualms about living in or driving an RV. Nor am I concerned about leaving my home or the community where I've lived for nearly 30 years. I'm very good in an emergency and quite independent (not to mention opinionated).
It's just at night I picture settling down in some strange, pitch-black place, and I get anxious. I could break a leg or have a heart attack. I could break down in the middle of nowhere. The RV could be stolen along with my poor old cats. I'm sure a lot of people have their own set of worries about heading out into the unknown. I'm taking note of what concerns me and am figuring out what to do to lessen these things from actually happening.
The point is that it really doesn't matter a whole lot of what the worries are, but that they are getting in the way. It's very nice to know that others understand those feelings and are out there offering support. I really appreciate your answers. Thanks again.

RE: Odd Question On Travel Trailer for us to travel in

I started out looking for a TT and learned a lot about the need for a safe trailer/tow vehicle combination. What you can safely tow with your van is going to be determined by its towing capacity and hitch setup, and the length of the trailer is limited by its wheelbase and the wheelbase of your van. A bad combination is more likely to flip over, not just the trailer, but the van as well.
Probably the best investment I made was reading "How to Select, Inspect, and Buy an RV" by JD Gallant. He doesn't recommend particular RV's in this book, but he gives excellent advice on how to evaluate what you can safely tow with the vehicle you have, and what defects to look for when inspecting an RV.
Reading this book will get you on the right track and help you find what you are looking for. I bought miy copy on Amazon and am so glad I did. The gorgeous 5th wheel I initially fell in love with had some serious defects I didn't even know to look for until I read this book.

How do I overcome the nighttime crazies?

For the last 3 years I've researched fulltiming. I know what RV I'm going to buy and just waiting to decide on the toad. In the next week I'm starting to sell off my stuff. The house should be ready to put on the market in the spring. I read everything I can get my hands on. Finances are in order. Health is good. I'll be fulltiming solo.
The problem? There is nothing to hold me back. Except myself. I wake up every morning raring to go. I go to bed every night thinking about scary stuff and change my mind. I'd really like to hear from those who have overcome this.

I was afraid they were too good to be true. You just saved me $100 and a carpet cleaning bill. I appreciate the replies.

Self-cleaning litterbox

I'll be fulltiming with two cats and am interested in getting a self-cleaning litterbox but have never tried one. Has anyone here used one in an RV? If so, how did you like it? Do they drain much electricity when not in use? Thanks for any advice.

RE: Class C vs Class A on Same Floorplan

I decided on a C. I'm most concerned about safety and with an A, there is nothing between you and oncoming traffic but the windshield. Lots of other reasons I'm going with a C, but that was the clincher.

RE: SS retirement spouse eligibility question

Look in the front of your phone book in the U.S. section and phone Social Secuity directly. You may be on hold for a while, particularly if you call at busy times, but it is more than worth it to get correct and specific information. The people who answer the phones are very good and pleasant. Just have all your questions written down beforehand along with your SSN.

RE: Traffic Stop and Search of RV with no cause

One point that jumped out to me that hasn't been addressed is that the OP admitted to being tired and "fuzzy" enough to forget Iowa, so not only was the officer looking at a speeder with no plates and a lot of cash, but perhaps a driver not responding as clearly or quickly as would be normal. Perhaps, without intending to, the OP appeared to be under the influence.

RE: Would ya?

A five-year plan can be disheartening. Once I realized my job was killing me, I decided to live as if I was expecting to be laid off, and made a very aggresive two-year plan:
Banked 25% of my take-home pay. No exceptions. Very very difficult but worked.
Paid off all debt before quitting. Did not use home to eliminate debt.
Bought absolutely nothing except bare necessities.
Had extensive medical checkups while under corporate insurance plan.
Raised limits on credit cards while still could show a steady work history.
Twenty-four months was short enough to keep me motivated to keep my job while living frugally, but long enough to get my finances in order. It was sort of fun as each month I saw real progress. In fact, the most frustrating part was shutting out the comments from friends who thought I should be miserable. Actually, I found it very satisfying.
Now, while getting my house ready to sell, there is no financial stress. I am extremely glad I continued working those two years.

RE: Full Timer RV Warranty Voided

I decided that I will not finalize an RV purchase without first seeing the warranties. It may be common practice not to let you see them until the purchase is competed, but after all, you are actually paying for the warranties in your purchase price and are entitled to the information first.
If something goes wrong after 30 days of use and you are fulltiming, why should you be entitled to less than someone who uses their RV for 30 days over an entire year?
Be willing to walk. In these days of slow sales, you have more leverage.

RE: Travelling with two dogs and a cat

If you have storage under a dinette seat that has entry from the outside, you can put a cat door to the storage area. It is too small for your dogs to get through and is easy to clean the litter from outside. Actually you don't need the outside entry if you are willing to lift the seat to clean the litter. Also, I read that one person found dead space next to their entry step and were able to put a litter box there, again using a cat door.

Perhaps you will be more welcome to your CG neighbors if you think in terms of not "under constraining" a large male Doberman.

RE: Soft Cat Food

I wish I could find Tender Vitals. It has a terrible chemical odor but is excellent to dry up some causes of loose stools. I am hording the little I have left just in case. That being said, I agree with the above posts that semi-moist cat foods are to be avoided.
Not all canned foods are in gravy or sauce. I foster cats, buy a lot of cat food and generally use Friskies because it is well-balanced, readily available and cats like it, but I do avoid the sliced or the gravey types. There are a lot of expensive foods available. Someone donated a whole bunch to me that her cats wouldn't touch Neither would mine. What you need to do is read the labels and look at the protein content to be sure your cat is getting enough.

RE: Born Free or Lazy Daze

If you haven't already, go to andybaird.com and read his description of Gertie, his 23' LD. He gives a very interesting account of the pros and cons of that unit and then read about his larger LD, Skylark.

RE: How do you give a cat medicine??

A friend of mine has a cat sanctuary and pills cats daily. She uses a pill popper. I've watched her pill a difficult cat and it was quick and effective. Of course she has had plenty of practice, but it is the way I'll go if the problem arises.
